Shift – Roma Series
This painting suggests a space of intimacy that challenges our understanding of this
term and the conventional comprehension of the subject matter. The viewer is put in
a position of mother and voyeur simultaneously and is precariously suspended
between the act of nurturing and the realm of the clandestine. To facilitate this
reading, the painting hovers between representation and abstraction, searching for
the middle ground that is indeterminate in it’s form but precise in it’s evocation of
atmosphere. The viewer, like the painting, is caught in the space (place) in-between.
